The best private jet for New York to Florida

By Patrick Harris

The short answer

For four to six passengers, a light jet does New York to South Florida nonstop in roughly two and a half to three hours and uses the fewest card hours doing it. A mid-size jet adds a stand-up cabin and better baggage for around the same time. Super-mid and heavy aircraft are unnecessary on this route unless the party is large or you are continuing to the Caribbean — the extra cost buys cabin, not speed.

The most-flown private route in the country

Teterboro to Palm Beach, Westchester to Boca Raton, Morristown to Fort Lauderdale — the Northeast to South Florida corridor is the densest private aviation traffic in the United States, and in winter it is not close.

It is also the route where people most consistently over-buy aircraft.

The distances

Route Direct distance
Teterboro → Palm Beach ~915 nm
Teterboro → Boca Raton ~940 nm
Westchester → Palm Beach ~975 nm
Boston (Hanscom) → Palm Beach ~1,120 nm
Teterboro → Naples ~1,010 nm

All of these sit comfortably inside the realistic full-cabin range of a modern light jet. That single fact is what should drive the aircraft decision, and frequently does not.

What each category actually gives you

Light jet — the efficient answer. A Phenom 300E, a Citation CJ3+ or a CJ4 flies this nonstop with four to six passengers in roughly two and a half to three hours. It consumes the fewest card hours, and on a flight of this length the comfort difference against a bigger cabin is smaller than most people assume. The real constraint is baggage rather than seats: six people with golf clubs is a different conversation from six people with overnight bags.

Mid-size jet — the comfortable answer. A Citation XLS+ or a Latitude gives you a near or full stand-up cabin, a proper lavatory and materially more baggage volume, at essentially the same block time. If you are working on board, traveling with equipment, or simply prefer to stand up, this is where the money is well spent.

Super-mid — usually unnecessary here. A Challenger 3500 or a Citation X will not get you there meaningfully faster; the route is too short for cruise speed to dominate. It makes sense if the party is eight or more, or if you are continuing to the Caribbean or onward to the West Coast.

Heavy — only for the party size. On this corridor a heavy jet is a cabin decision, not a range decision.

The airport question matters more than the aircraft

This is the part that gets underweighted. South Florida has four genuinely distinct private aviation airports and choosing the wrong one costs you an hour on the ground:

  • Boca Raton (BCT) — fifteen minutes from most of east Boca and Delray. A 6,276 ft runway, which handles light and mid-size jets comfortably and rules out some larger metal.
  • Palm Beach (PBI) — takes anything, including ultra-long-range aircraft. Extremely busy in season.
  • Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) — a dedicated general aviation field with excellent FBO depth, central to Broward.
  • Opa-locka (OPF) — Miami private aviation, and the gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America.

Landing twenty minutes from where you are actually going is most of the value of flying privately. It is worth more attention than the cabin width.

Winds, and why southbound is slower

Southbound legs on this corridor typically run ten to twenty minutes longer than northbound. Prevailing winds aloft favour the northbound direction, and the effect grows with distance.

It is a small thing, and it is the sort of small thing that separates a real estimate from a calculator that divides distance by cruise speed. Our estimate engine models it rather than ignoring it.

The practical recommendation

Four to six passengers with normal luggage: light jet. Six to eight, or anyone traveling with equipment, or a flight you intend to work through: mid-size. Larger party or continuing onward: super-mid.

And spend more time choosing the arrival airport than the aircraft. It is the decision that actually affects your day.

Related questions

While we are here.

How long is the flight from Teterboro to Palm Beach?

Roughly two and a half to three hours block in a light or mid-size jet, over about 915 nautical miles direct. Southbound legs run slightly longer than northbound because of prevailing winds.

Can a light jet fly New York to Florida nonstop?

Comfortably. The routing is around 950 nautical miles once airways are accounted for, which is well inside the realistic full-cabin range of a Phenom 300E, a Citation CJ3+ or a CJ4.

Which airport is best for South Florida?

It depends where you are actually going. Boca Raton (BCT) for Boca and Delray, Palm Beach (PBI) for Palm Beach and for anything needing a longer runway, Fort Lauderdale Executive (FXE) for Broward, and Opa-locka (OPF) for Miami.
